Lm318 black soot in exhaust

"I have a 1976 marinette with

"I have a 1976 marinette with Lm318's and Carter AFB's. When I start the engines or goose the throttles, I get black soot mixed with the exhaust water. Last year I replaced the distributor advance springs that were rusted out. To me it appears that too much gasoline is attempting to enter the engines, much the same as with older automobile engines blowing black smoke when the choke is improperly set or the float is not completely shutting off the fuel. I have assumed that the carbs have not been messed with, but that seems to be the place to look. Any suggestions on where to look would be appreciated. Thanks."

"A Marinetter, huh? Well! Here's afew things to try:

1. Put a timing light on the engines and see if the advance is going all the way to full advance. (Just had a bad experience with a similar distributor and, though it "looked good", one of the distributors only advanced 10 degrees, if that.) The mark should move at least a 1 1/2 when you rev it to 4,000 in neutral.

2. With the motor warm, turn the idles mixture screws in all the way. If the motor continues running, the carb(s) are flooding.

Finally--since I own a MArinette too--I've also seen black soot come out the pipes. In my case the motor was overheating.
