"I just put in a newer 3.0L Merc. into my '72 Starcraft, greased up the fittings in the outdrive and reattached it. I have the older R drive with the lift ring, anyway it shifted fine in the driveway with the muffs. Then I lifted the drive, drove 3 miles to marina launch, put it in the water, lowered the drive, started the engine and now I only have forward and neutral. Can this era drive linkage be affected by position? I hate to take the outdrive back off if it is not the source of the prob. Is there a clip that holds the cable slider and the little shift lever together there in the housing between the gimbal and the outdrive.

Thanks for any and all input.

John"

"Did you adjust the lower or upper shift cables at all?
Sounds like they need some adjustment.
If you got the roller in the notch in the shift slider, and the shift shafts meshed together properly, that end should be fine.
You may also need to change the lower shift cable if its old and not been changed for a few years.

"No They worked nicely prior to my pulling the drive, but now are not. So if the roller is in the notch of the shift cable end prior to pushing the drive in the last inch+/- or till you can't see it anymore, that connection should be good?"

"Should be, but something sounds fishy.
For the time it takes, I would take the drive leg off again and recheck everything down there rather than chance screwing something up.

"I'm getting close now, I hope. When I crawl under the drive and look up I see that the top of the shift shaft does not quite engage into the channel lever shift linkage from the upper half of the out drive. If I hold it up into the channel it seems to shift fine (me turning the prop). So does the shift shaft have a spring to hold it up that is missing or broken? Or does the upper linkage need to come down a bit?(jambed up by dirt, corrosion, and/or wear). You should know that I have a '74 Merc. manual, but can't seem to see anything like this listed in the diagrams and paragraphs.

Thanks,
John"

Has your lower shift shaft bee

Has your lower shift shaft been out for some reason?
The lower shift shaft should stay up and engaged with the shoe in the upper without the need of any springs or helpers.
I don't think the upper shaft can ride higher in its slots at all. Its fixed in position.

The lower shaft has not been o

The lower shaft has not been out in the 3 years since I've owned the boat. Either wear or a bend in the one or both has it so they can pass by each other now.

"Rod; it looks like if I loop

"Rod; it looks like if I loop an O-ring figure 8 style below the ears on the lower shift shaft and up over the little channel "shoe" the joint will be encouraged to stay together while still having some give. See anything wrong with doing this? At rest there in the driveway I can't find anything that can rub or shear this O-ring. It looks like the shift shaft is wearing on the top of the case from 36 seasons+/- of use, and the shoe is a little bent so one side of the channel is slightly higher than the other. Together the bend and wear allowed the joint to separate.

I have arranged now with the rubber O-ring and it is working well here in yard. Thanks for your input"
