" Our boat was vandalized by a 7 year old, he was yanking the throttle back and forth, multiple times before he was caught and stopped. As a result, the motor will only run in reverse, no forward. We disconnected the linkage cables from the motor and when the throttle moves to forward, the forward linkage moves forward. Move to neutral it goes back.....here is the (hopeful problem??!!), when it goes to reverse, both the forward and the reverse cable extend, it doesn't seem right. Could we need, as a result of the yanking back and forth, new linkage cables??? Would this problem cause the boat not to operate in forward and only in reverse?? Is it possible this 'child' disturbed something in the lower unit??? Prior to this, the motor was running great....thanks so much!! "

" Stephanie,
I would try this

" Stephanie,
I would try this: Disconnect both cables at the motor. Take a big screwdriver and while someone is turning the prop forward slowly, try to shift it into forward gear with the screwdriver using the part of the shift rod that the cable was attached to. If it goes in forward, one or both cables are damaged.
Good luck, let us know what you find. "

" we will give this a try.....

" we will give this a try......sounds good......however, what could be the problem if the prop will not freely turn in this manner???.......or will it turn with the cables disconnected??? I do seem to remember that they will not currently turn, we were looking at the prop last weekend.......this is a new area of motor exploration for us

will let you know how the cable suggestion goes

thanks "
