"I put my 9,9 in reverse the other day and it nearly crawled up outta the water! There's a two piece plastic latch down there with fancy springs. The hook engages the pin but that big piece with the spring doesn't seem to be doing much. It's an 01 & nothing looks broken but things aren't going together down there when I drop the motor in. Any suggestions?

"Douglas, let's see if I can help you here with a little diagram. Your motor should lock itself down when in reverse (you don't want it locked in forward incase you hit something - otherwise you could tear off your lower end).

Anyhow, when the motor is in reverse a guide on the shift shaft should push a linkage rod into a position where the end engages the lock.

I would suspect that your linkage is either 1) out of adjustment or 2) has jumped out of where it belongs (on either end).

Have a look at the diagram and then play around with your motor a bit, observing what happens as you switch it between neutral and reverse...

(the pic is kinda sideways with the upper left being the top of the motor)...
