Lighting in the Lifeboat Area

Floodlights covering lifeboat and rescue boat preparation and launching areas shall be powered by the main UPS’s and shall be equipped with local switches.
Question: why is it required to be powered from UPS? why not from fixtures with integral battery backup?

Not sure if there is anyone here that can answer the question with 100% accuracy.

If I was looking into this issue and found the statement you have I would backtrack to where is the requirement coming from (State/Federal)

My opinion
A Battery can do the job but there is nothing attached to Bats that will test them. Most UPS does have circuity that test and analyzes the batteries to assure they work when needed. Been several times I start hearing a Beeeep, Beeeep and find out the battery in the UPS has gone bad. So if using just Batteries they could go bad and it may not be known until it's to late

More opinion
A UPS supplies Bat voltage to AC current. AC current can supply more power then a 12 volt or more set of batteries can. So if the rescue boat uses a 120 VAC motor, then a UPS will be needed to convert 12/24/36 /etc to supply DC volts to a inverter to 120 VAC to run the motor

Again, this is just my thoughts
