"I have a 1986 Mercruiser 260

"I have a 1986 Mercruiser 260 Alpha One that was hard to start whether it was warm or cold so I replaced the carb kit and now the carb is leaking gas when starting and running. It leaks gas at the intake/carb junction. I have checked the tightness of the nuts, the gaskets, and looked for cracks. All looked normal. Needless to say it leaks gas nearly in a full stream so I won't let it run for more than 5 sec. Anyone know what too look for next? It is a 4 Barrel Rochester. Thanks, Bob"

Casting plugs leaking? I soak

Casting plugs leaking? I soaked my 87 carb overnight and had leaks in two plugs. I bought a newer reman. carb due to the insurance risk of my repairing the leaks and not being a professional carb rebuilder.

"What are the floats made of?

"What are the floats made of? Brass? Plastic?? The float needle is not shutting off the fuel for some reason...if this was not happening before you took it apart, then something that you did or didn't do while you had it apart is causing the problem. This is not an easy carb to rebuild and it sounds like it has to come apart again. Some type of manual is a necessity...they are available on this site"

"Yep, I used the book and the float and needle are right. It looks like the carb is fine; it is the fuel line connection that is leaking. I am going to replace the fuel line next as I think the brass nut may be the issue. Last thought would be the fuel inlet section of the carb may have an unseen crack. If the fuel line replacement doesn't work I am considering getting a new carb."

Brian

I hope the line change will fix the problem. I was also looking to replace the carb inlet connector but haven't be able to locate one on-line. Anybody have any recommendations where to look for one? I did replace the washer/gasket. I really appreciate everyone's help. This site and the members are a great resource.

"Can also try NAPA ( they have ones that repair stipped threads too.. ) i think, it's been a while."

You can order the part from Me

You can order the part from Mercruiser Parts.com including MarineEngine.com or from any Mercruiser/Mercury Parts Dealer. Most if not all aftermarket Marine parts dealer can also cross-reference the number and get you a comparible item.

I replaced the fuel line tonig

I replaced the fuel line tonight and presto the leak is gone. I think the old brass nut was unable to be tightened fully due to it being previously rounded prior to this carb rebuild. Thanks for the help. Bob

"Great !!! Grab your self a few of the "pipe" or crows-foot wrenches, they come in handy and will reduce that from happening again."
