I just bought a Mercury F25ELPT that came directly from the shop who had changed thermostat and impeller due to a overheating alarm. I took the engine for a 30 min test run and it worked fine.
After a couple of days I took it out again. After running it for 10 min doing 5 knots, it went into limp mode. It went out and in of limp mode for the next 10 minutes (varying RPM in 1-2 minutes intervals). I did not realize that it was in limp mode before attempting to give full throttle and almost nothing happened. I put it in neutral and gave full throttle and it was working fine. After a couple of minutes I put it in idle to find my fishing gear, but then I noticed a strange sound. Removed the engine cowling and found that it was leaking water from the thermostat housing.(see link for video) I drove the boat back on limping mode for 20 minutes, and just before reaching the berth the alarm on the engine started beeping.
I took off the thermostat housing and found that the gasket damaged. I have ordered a new gasket that will arrive in a week or so, but I am afraid that the damaged thermostat cover gasket is a result of a different problem. What do you think?
Why does it go into limp mode without any alarm sounding?
Why is it overheating when there is coming hot water out of the thermostat cover? I guess this water is hot because it have been cooling the engine..
