Leaking Oil From Lower Unit

I have had my boat with a Mecury 850 now for about 6 years and never had this problem. I noticed a puddle of oil under the motor a couple of evenings back. It looked like it was coming from somewhere around the lower unit. I replaced the lower unit oil since I had not done so this year and took it to the lake yesterday morning. Woke up this morning to find the same problem. It is leaking from a hole that is about 1/2 - 1" below where the top vent hole is on the opposite side of the motor. Tried to post a picture but it will not work. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Could be normal.-----But have the lower unit pressure tested for leaks if it has you worried.------Seal kits are cheaper than gears.

I have
the same problem on my 135 optimax. I may take the lower off myself and look for a seal problem. I will keep in touch with the solution.

Are you in Ontaro?

I was thinking about doing the same myself. The motor is older than me so I'm sure there could be some issues in there somewhere. Let me know your findings.

Hi, I CALLED A MOBILE MARINE MECHANIC, HE TOOK OFF THE LOWER UNIT IN A FLASH, OIL WAS LEAKING FROM THE SHIFT ROD SEAL AT THE FRONT OF THE OUTDRIVE. YOU CAN LOOK UP A VIDEO ON LINE TO WALK YOU THROUGH IT. I GOT LAZY.
GOOD LUCK
