"Hi,Hoping someone can advise me on a solution to my problem. I have a 175HP johnson V6 1985 which has a leak on the cylinder block. As you know this is metal to metal with no gasket. It looks like the previous owner scored the block while trying to pry it open. Is there any way to repair this with out having to scrap this motor?

"Hi Jamie, Thanks for reply. It is not leaking that much so hopefully not too bad. I will strip it this weekend and have a look. Do you think this could cause it to miss fire sometimes? Woulld it damage the motor to run it leaking and not repair it as the motor actually runs pretty well.

Richard"

"That crankcase is a metal to metal fit, sealed with what is called Gel-Seal that seals with the absence of air. Meaning that if a gap exists anywhere within the sealing area, a seal will not exist and the crankcase pressure will simply blow the Gel-Seal out."

"Hi, Many thanks for all your input. At this stage I am struggling to remove the crankcase. I have removed all bolts including the four underneath, plus the two locating pins but it will not break at the bottom. Is there something else I need to loosen? I cannot lift the power head completly off as one of the bolts from the mid section is seized. I also do not have a hoist. I did take the motor to a Johnson mechanic who was not prepared to work on it as he said it was too old and did not want to give a warranty. So it is up to me now. Wish me luck."
