Leak from gearcase

"I have purchased a parts motor and want to move the gearcase to my running motor. On the parts motor, I have lube from gearcase leaking from what I think is a water outlet. I would like to rebuild this lowerend and wanted to know what could allowing this oil to leak from here. I have never opened up a gearcase before, but I'm sure I can handle replacing seals and the sort. I have posted a photo below..

"As jwb says.
I reckon that must be a water drain. If it is definitely gear oil leaking from there then it is proabably coming from defective drive shaft seals but the sensible way forward is to renew all the seals, O rings and gaskets. Pressure test to confirm all is well."

"The pressure test, actually a pressure and vacuum test requires a pump or pumps to pressurise or evaccuate the gearcase. Never done it just know about it. A pro will obviously want to test it to be sure the repair is sound but probably few others bother.

You should use the sealants etc recommended in the workshop manual. Not sure if there will be any gaskets but I usually just grease them if there are (unless they are coated). I usually fit O rings with a smear of silicone grease. Normally I have not used anything on seals but having had problems with one (not on an outboard) I think in future I think I will coat the outside with a joint sealer of some kind."

I have removed the lower end.

I have removed the lower end. When removing the impeller housing it appears that there is gearcase oil coming from seal housing underneath the impeller plate. Is is possible that this is coming from the drive shaft oil retainer on top of the seal housing or the o-ring under the seal housing? Do I have to pull the drive shaft to get to the o-ring under the seal housing?

Most likely from the oil retai

Most likely from the oil retainer (the drive shaft seal)

You have not said what engine so have not checked but I think you will be able to unbolt and lift out the seal and bearing assemly. Take note of the position of all the bits underneath it. Renew the seals in it and replace the O ring as well. It would be foolish to reuse a piddling little bit like that.
I dont think it will be necessary to remove the shaft

I have a Johnson 70EL76D. &#4

I have a Johnson 70EL76D. (the picture at the top of the post is just a reference for the hole that was leaking the gearcase oil) I have removed the 4 bolts from the top of the seal housing and it doesn't appear to want to move at all. Is there any trick to loosening it?

Thanks for your help!

"jwbmarine, could you explain

"jwbmarine, could you explain how with the screw drivers? I tried prying upward with them, but the housing didn't want to move."

"Yes, I have removed the 4 scr

"Yes, I have removed the 4 screws below the water pump housing. When I try to "pop it up" the screw drivers are marring the edge where the water pump attaches to."
