"I have an 87 Egg Harbor that has develped a leak around the forward seal on the velvet drive transmission. The boat had sat out of the water for almost a year. There was no leak at first, but it has now delveloped. Short of pulling the transmission, has anyone tried using a "stop leak" product before the mechanical fix? Thanks"

"I have not tried any stop leak tricks on the VD. But, if you can pull just the drive and leave in the engine, I would certainly go that route. It's hard to contain 5w oil using 20y/o seals!"

Forward seal??? Not cerain where you are talking about. I just pulled my engine and noticed a leak at the "rear" seal on on my velvet drive - currently replacing it. What else???

"There is a forward oil seal at the input stubby splined shaft. Right at the oil pump cover. Straitforward replace unless there is shaft rust/pitting. As I recall, if you pull the entire cover, you must realize that it goes on either of two ways, depending on engine rotation."

The seal is where the engine mates with the VD. Does anyone know the torgue numbers on the bolts at both the engine and the coupling where the shaft mates with the transmission? May try and see if they have vibrated loose before going any further.

"65 lb/ft for the 6 flywheel t

"65 lb/ft for the 6 flywheel to crank bolts (7/16").
35 lb/ft for the damper plate to flywheel bolts (3/8").
The "coupling" is a slip fit spline, no bolts there."

There seems to be two different type of transmission - the starbord being a #1018006 - 1.91-1 ratio. The shaft goes directly into the housing. The port is VDAS1772C-72IFWG-DIV. On this one the shaft goes to a metal to metal coupling with 11/16 bolts and then into the housing. This is one that is leaking. Any thoughts?

"Tim:

traditionally, bolt sizes are refered to by the diameter of the threaded portion, not by the size of the hex head. A 7/16" diameter bolt comes with an 11/16" hex head; a 3/8" bolt has a 5/8" hex head.

Also, transmission-to-housing fasteners are torqued to 50 #ft, the rear mounts get 45 #ft, and if you take of the pump cover, it gets 204-264 #in.

don't have any data on thte VDAS gear; would suspect it is newer. the '72C' is a good indicator. Also, my reference says the 1.91:1 gears have output rotation opposite the input."

"Try some K & W Trans Seal

"Try some K & W Trans Seal first. Good stuff and, what the heck, what have you got to loose?

Jeff"
