Late 80s Johnson 70hp bogs and dies when accelerating

I have a late 80s Johnson 70 hp that idles well and runs at intermediate and full throttle well but it often bogs down and dies when going from low throttle to full throttle. The fuel is fresh and the bulb remains fairly hard. Pumping it does not help. When accelerating, once the motor gets through the spot where it wants to bog down and die, it runs great. will be performing a compression check. Any help would be appreciated.

Cpmpression test is # 1 thing to do.

Check engine sync and do a spark gap test as well. What is the model number of the motor?

Haven't done the sync and gap test yet. May have time tomorrow. VRO 70 Model #J70TLCO. I think it is a 1985.

Is the timer base good and free ??

You may find that the 75 HP models had an adjustable low speed needle .-----------The 70 hp models did not have that as original equipment.
