I have a late 80’s 20 hp 2 stroke. 5 years ago I took it on a long trip. At the time it started with no issue and idle but when I tried to run it would stall out unless the choke was wide open.
It went into storage when I got back and life to over. 2 years later I did a carb rebuild but was another 2 years until I got a chance to try it. I took it out and ran it for about 15 minutes. When I got it back to the launch it shut off and would not start. I took it back to storage.
A week ago I got new spark plugs, a compression tester and a spark tester intending to try to figure out the issue. Of course it started right up and idled perfectly . I hooked up a hose and ran it for a bit the back to idle with no issues. I did this for a few days with the same results.
Friday I took it to a lake and ran it for about an hour at idle and wide open for half that time. I put it in idle to adjust the motor trim and it shut off and I could not get it to start again. Not even attempted to start. I had to be towed back to the launch and just out of curiosity I tried starting it again and it started for a second before I shut it off.
It fells like a gas issue but not sure given that it sat in a barn for over a year after the last similar issue then ran for an hour. It almost seems like once it is running full tilt it is runs for awhile then dies.
Brand new 0 ethanol gas and oil. Also use sea foam gas treatment.
Maybe I didn’t get the carb rebuild correct? Or maybe this indicates a deeper issue.
