*late 70 johnson tilt trim

I purchased a used unit to add to my engine. When I received it the drain plugs on the bottom were gone, motor was fried. So I replaced the plugs and installed a new motor. Filled up with fluid and tried to run it. The problem is the two bottom plungers will go in and out but not the main (big) one.
Any ideas?

What drain plugs?... There are no drain plugs!

Manual release valve on the starboard (right) lower side area.... is it completely closed? Accessible thru that small hole near the bottom of the starboard transom bracket.

When fully tilted, did you fill the reservoir completely to overflowing... and double check that fluid level?

The engine when in a tilt position lowers due to gravity until it drops to the trim rod position.

If the steering tube/tilt tube is tight due to corrosion or whatever, the trim rods will draw in first due to the jammed tube fighting gravity... then the tilt tube would take over hydraulically if all was well.

There is a threaded hole on the bottom of the large cylinder and one right behind it on the bracket. Should they be open?

There is a special fluid line that connects those two holes... supplies hydraulic fluid to the center tilt cylinder from the main reservoir valve assembly. Line #387397 and 2 O Rings #321117... about $70.00. Nothing else will do. If you have no luck finding these items, I have them and will discount. Good luck.
