Kohler 5E Marine Generator.

I have a question.

I have Kohler 5E generator in my 2005 Sea Ray 320.

I'm confused, last Saturday was the first time I used my generator this season. No problem, it started right up, and runs good. I checked my AC current, perfect 120v.

However, I noticed my 12v system meter was buried at 18v. I shut every single 12v breaker off; no difference. Then I shut off the breaker to the charger, again no difference.

Why such a high output on the 12v side? I though generators only supplied ACV?

My neighbor has the same boat; only difference is his is 3 years older, 2002. We started his, and his 12v meter only went to 15.8v - 16v.

Upset with Kohler, as I sent them a more detailed description, and their response in a nutshell was: "Sorry to hear about your problem. Contact a certified Kohler Marine Generator Service Center, and according to your location" they gave me 3 companies. The closest one was 74 miles away. REALLY!!!! Great response.

Anyone have any idea what the problem is?

Most gensets only supply regulated AC power. Had to say without further investigation why go get 18+ VDC with the generator running...could be a simple as a connection has corroded. A good marine electrician should be able to sort it out in a reasonable time as long as he can get access to the parts involved. FWIW, even a 15.8VDC source connected to a 12VDC system is not a good thing, especially for the battery(ies).

Probably a good idea to use a known good DC voltmeter and make sure the voltmeter is telling the truth... if its accurate, I'd start verifying the ground and bonding systems are intact...a lot of things can degrade over a 20 year span of time...

Thanks Mark for the great advice. I had another marine mechanic tell me that the even though the generator produces ACV, when running it charges the starting battery. He suggested I start there considering its the DCV that's effective.

No, according to Sea Ray electrical diagram, (2005 320) I have 4 batteries. Then inner 2 batteries are the Starboard batteries, and the outside batteries are for the Portside engine. The generator starter is connected to the portside battery.

18 volts is telling me the charging circuit isn't connected to anything.
Check the Generator Ground and (the Regulator) fuses.
Well, there are 3 twist lock fuses VOLT REG, BATT CHRG and INPUT on the control box on top of the Generator.
May as well check them all.

I have a Kohler 5e question; Where does this big round connector (206612-1 can be found on AMAZON) plug into?
Mine has been cut completely off.
I know it plugs into the Generator box on the opposite side of the fuses but, where does the other end go?

I thought the fuses keep these things from burning out like light bulbs every five years.
Need cheap PCB (GM10516D061605 Controller).
Anybody have one?
