"I HAVE A 1982 MERCRUISER 470

"I HAVE A 1982 MERCRUISER 470 224CID I4 - I RECENTLY HAD A NEW WATERPUMP PROFESSIONALY INSTALLED. I JUST TOOK IT OUT AND WITHIN 20 MINUTES RUNNING. I START HEARING A KNOCKING COMING FROM THE OUTDRIVE OR LOWER UNIT. I PUT IN NUETRAL AND REVED THE MOTOR. SOUNDS GREAT. IT ONLY HAPPENDS IN FORWARD AND REVERSE. AFTER GETTING HOME I PUT IT IN FORWARD GEAR AND BY HAND TURNED THE PROP IN THE FORWARD DIRECTION. IT DID SPIN BUT DID MAKE A KLANKING / GRINDING SOUNDS. LIKE GEARS SLIPPING, I THEN TRIED TURNING THE PROP IN REVERSE WHILE STILL BEING IN FORWARD POSITION. AND IT WOULD NOT TURN. SAME APPLIES FOR THE REVERSE GEAR, SAME RESULTS. I KNOW ON OUTBOARDS WHILE BEING IN GEAR THE PROP WILL NOT SPIN UNLESS THE MOTOR SPENDS. I AM NEW TO INBOARDS AND OUTDRIVES. ANY SUGGESTIONS?"

"Well the stern drive is a lit

"Well the stern drive is a little different than the outboards (the smaller outboards anyway). The prop on the stern drive will do just as you said it did. This is normal.
If there is any clicking in neutral the shift cable is out of adjustment.
As for the noise you heard it would be a good idea to check the condition of the oil in the lower uint for starters. Check that the oil level is full first. The person that did the repair may not have refilled the oil. It happens.
Look for signs of water or metal flakes in the oil. Water means bad seal, metal means bad news. The other cause could be the gimble bearing is starting to fail.(yes it is a real part) But I can't remember one knocking. U joints are another item to check. Check the oil lavel yourself because if it is low and there is damage to the gear case it is on the repair person for fixing it. Most shops will try to cover their butts in a case like this because the parts are very very expensive."

"I CHECKED THE OIL LEVEL AND D

"I CHECKED THE OIL LEVEL AND DID NOT SEE WATER NOR METAL IN OIL, HOWEVER I DID HOOK-UP THE WATER HOSE AND FIRED IT UP IN THE DRIVEWAY TODAY. I DID HEAR THE SAME NOISES IN NEUTRAL AS WELL AS IN GEAR. I TRIED TO LISTEN WHERE THE NOISES WAS COMING FROM. MOST LIKELY FROM THE OUT DRIVE, NOT DEFINATE. TAKING IT IN TOMORROW TO BE INSPECTED.
I DO APPRECIATE YOUR HELP. ANY OTHER SUGGESTIONS, PLEASE REPLY. I'M THANKING OF BUYING A MANUAL AND POSSIBLY DOING THE WORK MYSELF. LIKE I SAID OLD AND CHEAP BOAT WITH MINIMAL INCOME. THANX FOR YOUR HELP AND ANY SUGGESTIONS IN THE FUTURE WOULD BE APPRCIATED. GB"
