Kill-switch on Mercury 200 20HP 1971

Hello

I have a Mercury 200 (20hp) outboard from 1971. The serial number is 3233368. I want to make a kill switch system on it, and want some help. I tried to connect a modern kill-switc by connecting red wire on the wire from the switch on the motor, and the other to ground but it did not work.

I hope someone could tell me how does the switch on the old mercury work, and how can I make a kill-switch on it

Regards

Fred

Just to be clear, I want to mount a system like this, for safety.

Get one that has a provision for ---Normally open and normally closed on it.

I have got one, I believe is normally open. But I do not know how to connect it. I tried connecting it directly to the wire from the stop-button on the motor, and ground, but the engine kept running using that option.

If it already has a stop button you need to interrupt that circuit to kill the motor you need to interrupt the ground it works backwards from a normal kill circuit. You want your safety switch normally closed and when you release the lanyard the switch should open.

Thanks. I will look closer on the switch, but I believe it is grounded in the switch-case itself. Only one wire. I take some photos later.

Yes with the phasemaker ignition everything is backwards when the points close is when it sparks. you kill switch is normally closed and when you push the button it opens the circuit. Just connect your new switch in series with the kill button wire your new switch has three terminals NO and NC correct?
