Kill switch help requested...

I have a 85ESL69E (serial J3034987) outboard with original controls. Unfortunately there is no kill switch/lanyard and would like to add one. Question; Where do I attach the kill switch wire within the control box?

The control box is not the push button type. Moving the lever forward or back engages the hydro-electric switch within the control box. This unit has the Black plug connecting the wiring harness.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

That 1969 V4 engine has Battery Capacitance Discharge type ignition system (yours) needs a kill switch that actually turns the key off which should still be available, perhaps here on this site or at your local dealership.

joereeves, Thanks for the reply. You wouldn't have a part number by chance?

To contradict myself... The type that actually turns the key off may no longer be available... at least I can't find it. However, on this site there are several Kill Switches that I've looked at. The one you need is one that "makes contact" when the lanyard is attached... and breaks contact when the lanyard is yanked off. Check what you have first before tossing it. The one on this site (makes contact with lanyard attached... breaks contact with it removed... is number 420487-1, a two wire lanyard type.

EDIT: For some reason, that number and any combination of it does not register. However, all is not lost...............

Top of this page... Click on "Boat Accessories"... Click on Electrical "Switches"... Go to bottom of page, click to go to page 2... Scroll to center portion of page... Click on 420487-1... Add to cart if that's what you want.

Why that number comes up in error initially ... I don't have a clue!

Joe, can you clarify your last post, I am confused a bit....thanks.

Confused?.... Yeah, me too Tim, and I have not a clue why! However (hopefully), I straightened that out with my step by step routine... unless that's screwed up too! :)

If I ever get to 80, I probably won't be any better, when does the downhill slide start? Wait a minute, you wouldn't know yet!

Thanks again, I have the kill switch (pull lanyard type) I do not know where to attach it. (e.g. What color wire to ground)

I realize you have the lanyard type kill switch... BUT... there are two different types.

One makes contact between the wires when the lanyard is ON.

One makes contact between the wires when the lanyard is OFF

Which one do you have? It does make an expensive difference.

Thanks again,

That one will not work with your ignition system. That one is designed for magneto and the Magneto Capacitance Discharge (solid state) systems.

You need the one that makes contact when the lanyard is ON as described in post reply #4 (above).

1 - To install.... remove the wire from the ignition switch that supplies 12v to the switch terminal (Terminal normally marked "B" (battery).

2 - Connect the RED wire of the kill switch to the wire you just removed.

3 - Connect the black wire of the kill switch to the "B" terminal of the ignition switch.

Wired in the above manner, the lanyard needs to be installed in order for the engine to crank over and/or start.

Removing the lanyard when the engine is running will cause the engine to stop immediately.

Let us know if all is well after repairs... or if you still have a problem.
