"Ok, as of today, I have 2 1983 Bayliner Capri 1950's. I can only drive one, so clearly I have a decision pending. One is maybe 10% nicer and has an AQ125A Volvo 4 cyl with a closed, pressurised cooling system. The other is a little more rough (needs some wood work on the right side firewall) but has an AQ175A GM 3.8L V6. I have no information about the previous service performed on either boat, but both have been neglected but run and start easily.

Aside from 50 horses, are there any benefits offered by the V6 to compensate for the increased fuel consumption? How much more gas will the larger engine use? Will I really notice the horsepower increase?"

Regarding which boat to keep, that's a personal decision. If you don't mind less top end speed and less power and you prefer fuel economy, then the AQ125A is probably the answer. However, if you want some extra power (and speed) and dont mind 25-40% higher fuel consumption, then the V6 is the way to go.

Yes, you will notice the horsepower increase, both in speed and better hole shot, as well as better towing capacity if you pull skiers (and higher fuel bills too; but what the heck, life is too short anyway!!)

"Well, I have $2100 in two boats on trailers. I really hope I can come out on top and keep one and maybe make a buck. Thank you for all your help. I am an auto mechanic and am quickly finding marine work to be much more tedious and specialiszed."

I'd take whichever vessel is more mechanically and aquatically sound. I'd rather deal with a slower speeds or bigger gas bills (depending on which boat you chose) to problems that might arise from picking the vessel that needs more work.

Breakdown= off the water for the most part. I'm sure if you asked, the majority would rather be on the water going a little slower or shelling out more dough for gas than waiting or working on a fix while everyone else is out enjoying the summer."
