"OK guys help me out here....... again please.
This is my 58 Johnson 18 hp thats been idle 7 yrs or more. I rebuilt the lower end, gears, pump, seals ect. New plugs, converted to pump style fuel system using 24:1 mix. Started right up in my clean trash can. Was tinkering with the low speed screws mostly and it was sounding good!!! Then it happened. Engine slowed to a crawl and stoped. Seized. Only briefly and it runs fine now but it gets too hot to fast. Got to have a water restriction somewhere. Have good flow from exhaust
but looks like pee hole is not peeing much if at all. Does this engine have a thermostat? If not where do you think the most likely place would be blocking the water flow???"

"No thermostat. When you had t

"No thermostat. When you had the bottom off - did you check the impeller? That motor has big passages so unless a mad dauber or it has a bad impeller, it's not that easy for the water passages in that motor to get plugged."

"yup, put a new impeller in.

"yup, put a new impeller in. The bottom end was jammed packed with mud daubber mud, but Im sure I got it all out unless there are passages in the upper half that them pesky buggers could get in to?? Actually I dont see any reason why they wouldnt have filled the exhaust tube. Ill check and see If I can tell"

"exhaust tube is clear up to t

"exhaust tube is clear up to the powerhead as far as I can tell. I have a good flow from the exposed part of the drive shaft cover at anything above an idle. I did discover that I was supposed to use sealer on the water pump plate to housing, which I didnt. Think tha might loose enough pressure to cause the over heating?"
