Junk Motor??

Hi everyone i have a 1977 Merc 70hp (700). The motor starts right up but it always dies after a few minute's. A friend of mine said he found a small piece of debris in the (bowl) and that was not letting the motor get fuel. The motor usually dies when im planed out and im sometimes able to refire but not always. Last time i got it restarted and idle'd home, as soon as i hit reverse to dock it it died and could not restart. I pushed the primer ball and saw gas dripping out from under the cover and in the river. Any idea's??

Also notice'd when i slow down to a no wake speed im seeing white smoke? or steam? comming out of the back of the motor. is that normal?

What are the results of a compression test ?------------When was the water pump impeller replaced ?--------When were carburetors serviced , if ever ?--------The leaking gas indicates that carburetors need work.

compression was around 130, not sure about the impeller, water shoots out the tell tale even at idle, cleaned out the carbs today.
