"picked a mercruiser ford 888

"picked a mercruiser ford 888 302 motor, that was set up from setting a while, got it free w brake cleaner and wd 40, drained oil out and it was a carmel thick color with about a cup and half of water looking sumbstance, also one side of engine plugs were rusty, any ideas if engine block or head is cracked, if so whats the best way to determine? thanks"

"Dan's link is for pressur

"Dan's link is for pressure testing the drive through the oil vent... not for the cooling system.

If your engine is on a pallet, your best bet would be to pull the intake and heads and send to any machine shop for cleaning and inspection. Before you send off the heads, obviously you'll want to take a look for any obvious cracks. If you've got water in the oil pan, you've got problems. Was this power plant stored out in the rain by any chance?"

"not to sure if it was out in

"not to sure if it was out in the rain, bought it for 50 bucks to scab a few parts off of it for my 351 ford mer, trying to determine if this 302 is worthy to get running or part out, any other ideas? No cracks are obvious, not to sure what was added to oil before I bought it"

"Likely the engine was pulled

"Likely the engine was pulled and replaced due to the water in the oil and a probable crack somewhere.

The fact that it is milky caramel color means it was run for a while, and if it was run for any length of time it is probable that the bearings and crank are scored and shot.

It may be rebuildable, or useable as is, but the only way to tell would be to drop the oil pan and pull some bearing caps and check it out. You may or may not find other corrosion issues resulting from the water having sat in it for who knows how long.
Just my opinion.
