jumps out of gear

I have a 1968 johnson 20hp bought it used and was told the top half was rebuilt seem to run ok but i think its miss firing put 2 new plugs in it. I took it out on the water and it is still missing and popping out of gear. Is this a timing problem? Or could it be caused from the wrong fuel/oil mixture? Any input would be much appreciated. Time to take the lower unit apart---------------------The clutch dog is worn ( rounded off ) along with the dogs on the forward gear.---------A very popular engine ( same lower unit for about 20 years ) and used parts may well be found locally.-------New parts can also be had but somewhat pricy.----------------Or it could be that no one has adjusted it correctly.------------Is it the same amount / distance from nuetral to forward and nuetral to reverse at the shift lever ???
