Johson 4.5 no water out of pee hole

I put in a new impeller last year and this motor pumped water fine all summer. I got it out from my basement today and fired it up and it is not spitting water out of the pee hole just exhaust.
Any ideas on what I can do?

Water in your test bucket must be 6" above the impeller.

OK Not sure if it was that high. Had in a plastic storrage container. Will try garbage can and let you know!

What racerone said, and also remember that it might need to run for a bit and heat up before water starts coming from the pee hole.

If not, maybe the thermostat is broken?

It should pee about 3 seconds after motor starts.----I doubt you will find a thermostat on the 4.5 HP model !

Got it going! Not sure if was because of putting lower unit in a garbage can instead a storage bin.
