I'am new to the boating world. I have just purchased a Fletcher speed boat with Johnston V4 115hp. All servicing and piston change reciepts came with the boat. We cranked it over very briefly and all seemed to be ok. What checks do I need to do on the motor before I actually take it out on the lake? I was told too mix the fuel at a ratio of 50:1, would this be ok? I have primed the fuel system using the bulb and fuel started seaping out of the inlet at the motor side, I was wondering if this was normal or do the seals need changing? The motor has not been ran since October 07 and maybe the seals etc have dryed out? The motor has been stored in hot climate, Dubai.

"50::1 fuel mix is correct. It sounds like it is leaking from the quick disconnect fitting on the fuel line? if so, change out the fuel line.

Get a motor flusher for that model and run the motor using the hose and flusher as a water supply. f it has been sitting so long, the carbs may be dirty."

Colin....on an evinrude or joh

Colin....on an evinrude or johnson motors it is very important to make sure the fitting on the fuel line snaps all the way in place when you connect it..the little lever that you press down when connecting should actually snap all the way to its original position when seated correctly...if you look there is a groove in the pin coming from the motor for it to snap into...there is also a o ring in the connector on the fuel line...that may be missing or cockeyed..cheap fix tho..the whole little connector is in the 5 buck range..other things that i would do to that motor before i put in water...check compression..all new plugs...change lower unit oil...new water pump..inspect all the wiring including battery cables..run with the ears and look for leaks in fuel system..you may see water come out of rear of engine with ears and you may not...after you run like that(2000 rpm is about max i like to run with ears) put the boat in water and run it at dock and check water coming out of both ports in rear...shift it into forward and reverse and make sure you are ok there...then run the boat..good luck..Carl

"Thanks for your advise guy's. two more questions. The flusher is what they call muffs just like ear muffs?
Where do I find the motor I.D plate? I have found one but it is on the tilt trim body, number G707 1790.
