Johnston 10HP QD-24b.I am gett

Johnston 10HP QD-24b.I am getting around 68Lbs. of compression for both cylinders and have good spark. I can not get the motor to turn over. I had it running last year but seemed a little ruff at the end of the year.Rebuilt the carbs. and put in a new fuel pump. The contacts are set at .020 and the spark plugs are .030.
I tried shooting starter fluid in the ports where the spark plugs are but still could get nothing.Removed the Cylinder head to check the walls and they are pretty smooth. Cleaned up carbon on the piston heads.I tightened the cylinder screws to 10ft lbs.I would think the compression would be enough for the motor to at least turn over.Any suggestions would appreciate.

Starting fluid has no lubricat

Starting fluid has no lubricating oil in it. Continued use will lead to scoring of the cylinder walls. Use a squirt bottle and fuel/oil mix instead.

I assume by "won't turn over" you mean it will not fire. You must check for a spark before doing anything else.

Do a search on this forum for "checking for a spark"

"I have used a fuel and oil mixture in the spark plug ports and the motor still will not turn over. I do have spark. I checked it out by gronding out one lead and taking the other one to 1/4 inch to ground and got a good spark. The fuel pump was recently replaced but even with this the motor should still turn over? I checked the timing of the motor which is set by the cam and that looks good. If there is something I am missing(carbs, timing) I would appreciate any help. Unit is Johnston 10 HP Model QD24-B. I re-checked the compression and it is actually 75 on one piston and 73 on the other."

"I'm not familiar with the QD24-B motor. Try this web site as well: http://www.aomci.org/

Lot's of good advice there on antique outboards.

If you have a good spark and the motor turns over ok then it is a fuel problem. The carburetor has small orfices in it that must be clear. Use a good aersol carb cleaner and blow the orfices out well. Use eye protection and good ventilation.

Does the bulb get hard after pumping up the fuel from the tank?

Be sure to preset the high and low speed settings for the carb as described here on this forum by Joe Reeves. Do a forum search for it.

Look here as well for lots of good basic information:

As I stated the motor does not

As I stated the motor does not turn over. I did notice that the new fuel pump was not fully seated. I know the pump is working now because I see it pumping gas out of the hose. That still did not solve the problem. I tried spraying gas right into the carbs but still will not turn over.

you didnt accidentally switch

you didnt accidentally switch the plug wires did you?

you should have a good blue spark that will jump a 7/16-3/8 gap

have you hit anything with the prop?

the reason i ask about hitting anything is because you could have sheered the flywheel key if so. take out the top spark plug and insert a pencil in the cyl. now turn the flywheel until the pencil comes out as far as it will go and then just as it stats to fall look at your timing marks. it should be at 0deg aligned with the timing pointer.

if you have good spark and obviously you have fuel (at least from directly squirting it into the carbs) then it should at least try to fire.... even with low compression.
