I have a johnson/evinrude 1960

I have a johnson/evinrude 1960 hp motor and i tried to take it out on the water when i finally got it started it wouldnt move the boat even at a high speed. It seem to be turning the prop but couldnt really tell (more then likly it wasnt) all i could see was bubbling. then the motor died and couldnt get it started again. When i got it home i tried to turn the prop by hand it was turning the motor.

This is the first time i have had a boat and am very new to boating. I would appreciate any input anyone can give me.

Thank you very much.

"The cavitation plate (plate just above the prop) should be approximately 3/4" below the keel (bottom of boat at transom).

Check the prop for slippage by: Remove the prop nut, then with a magic marker, mark the hub and propeller in a straight line. Replace the prop nut. Now, run the engine in the water. Remove the prop nut again and chck that magic marker line. If they are now out of line, the prop needs re-hubbing."
