Johnson trim gauge question

I am replacing my trim gauge on my 89 Ranger w/ Johnson 150. The old trim gauge had a metal tube marked 88 on it going from the I terminal to the S terminal. What is this and how can I test it to make sure its ok. New trim gauge is not responding when hooked up .

That is a resistor.

With 12v being applied to the trim gauge, connect a jumper from the "S" terminal to the "G" terminal. If the gauge needle pegs full up, the gauge is good.

how many ohms should that read, and does it go between the I and S terminals? What is the purpose of that resistor?
