"let me set the story so far.

"let me set the story so far. 1988 60hp 3cyl johnson outboard. Problem is tilt/trim keeps floating down. Still goes up and down. Pulled the tilt/trim unit beginning of the season this year. got a rebuild kit from my local dealer. Rebuilt the tilt piston (center). Rebuilt the 2 cap pistons. Thats as far as I got. Tried to get into the valve bodies but the allen set screws were stuck and kinda gave me cold feet. Any hu got the unit all back together and back on the outboard with new hydrastatic fluid from northern hydraulics (honda brand). Holy crackers she worked up and down. Manally bled the system with the manual bleeder screw. Thought it was working until it went back to the floating down again. note that this system doesn't leak anywhere, even before and after the rebuild. I understand that it wasn't a toal rebuild, just a half "A" rebuild. Talked to a few local mechs and they talked me into purchasing a new manual bleeder screw, $75 for this screw alone. Needless to say that I was happy when this screw did NOT! fix the problem. Question is since I did that half rebuild, do I get back into the valve bodies and do what should have been done to begin with. Kinda scared about those vavle bodies and set screw.Want to get this fixed and I believe it can be done by myself. Need some help with some guidance. Can anybody take the time and help me with parts, availability of parts, upper echelon publications and/or manuals. Sure could use the help if there is someone out there willing. Thank you for reading this!

"Paul..... If by Manual Bleede

"Paul..... If by Manual Bleeder Screw, you're speaking of the screw valve that exists at the lower starboard side of the unit, that's a manual release valve and has nothing to do with bleeding the unit. The unit is self bleeding.

It's been my experience that when the unit slowly drops down, it is the fault of the valves that exist under the oil pump.

When time permits, visit my store (copy/paste) at: stores.ebay.com/Evinrude-Johnson-Outboard-Parts-etc?refid=store"

"Thanks joe for reading my post. So I take it that I was on the right track as far as the vavles under or behind the pump. you told me to visit your store on ebay. Ichecked it out but couldn't find anything that remotely concerns my incident at hand. Persistance on getting to those valves is my job right.those set allen screws scare me though. concerns are do I put some heat on them to try and bust them loose. Want to tackle it but perhaps maybe a pep talk could get me on the right track. I'm going for another rebuild kit the only thing is that my dealer tells me that this kit is becoming short at hand. Can you steer me as to the publication and or manual I should be obtaining. Is there another source for this rebuild kit in the case I can't get it myself. Thanks joe and thanks for showing your ebay site

"To answer your question jwmar

"To answer your question jwmarine yes. I can raise the motor all the way up thru the trim and thru the tilt and in a matter of minutes it will go all the way down. while running I can trim the motor and just watch the trim gauge lower. thanks for looking at my post.

"my experience,...when leaking

"my experience,...when leaking all the way down has 'usually' not always, been the trim 'UP' rel valve...which is on the transom side of unit...get a factory service manual to help you fix."

"there is a special tool,that

"there is a special tool, that looks like a big nut, that u screw the valves in for testing...used w/air pressure and submerged in wtr reveals the leak,if caused by that valve.i would suggest taking to a shop for testing/repair,..if that wont wk,...remove all the valves on the back(transom side)of the unit and take to shop for testing,..or invest in all the special tools. If the valves ck out ok,just follow manual for other procedures, but it eliminates bad ck valves."

"Thanks jwmarine, between you

"Thanks jwmarine, between you and joe I have gotten more information in 24 hours than what I have gotten all summer long with other indiviuals. Gonna take that advise and get with my service guy. sometimes a guy just has to put the old 6 shooters away. besides who wants to buy all those special tools you were talking about and use them what? once. hopefully my service guy will let me do some of the work cuz i got this bone about trying it myself. Hopefully you can help me out in the future. Thanks a bunch!!!"

"Before you buy all of the spe

"Before you buy all of the special tools, manuals, etc, and knock yourself out, you may want to consider what the rest of us do. Try finding a used unit from Ebay or a marine salvage yard. Typically $200 or less, you will be up and running in no time, and you keep the old unit for spares."
