"I have a n old Johnson super seahorse
Model # rds-27a Serial # J2541787. also has the numbers 377407. D2 on the block.
What year is and how can I find put thow to work on it.

It runs, but just barely. I think it may need some carb work.

My brother says to save myself alot of trouble and just buy a new motor.

Any help would be appreciated.

Any advise would be welcome"

"RDS-27 is a 1965 40 hp.

The pros would start with a compression test.

Check the ignition system ... make sure you have good sparks at the ends of the plug leads. Replace the plugs if any doubt exists about them (J4C gapped at 0.030").

Once you have good sparks move onto the fuel system and carb.

may well need a carb clean, especially if playing with the choke gets it going a bit better."

"Hi Chris, Tim here. I agree with Vic and the compression test should be done with both plugs out and fully charged battery. An adequate reading would be 100psi. I would suspect the coils also if spark is questionable. They tend to crack and short out to the stator plate once the motor starts up. Aftermarket coils run about $20 each and are available at any good automotive parts store. A points and condensor set would be available there too. They are fairly inexpensive, compared to electronic parts for newer models. I am repairing a 1995 Force 40 now and the stator is over $200 my cost, and that is just 1/4 of the ign. system components. You should evaluate the lower unit, check gear lube and look for fishing line under the propeller which could damage the prop shaft seal. If things check out there and shifting seems good, then you might have a great motor. I run premium 100% syn. oil at 2oz per gallon of non-oxy fuel. Carb and fuel pump kits are available and cheap. I still use my first new Evinrude 6hp 1966 model which I learned to guide with when I was 10 years old, and been repairing outboards ever since......mostly Merc's, Ha! Only kidding. Take care, Tim"

"Vics and Timothy,
Thanks for the help. I will try my local parts store , to replace plugs, Coil condenser and points. I will also try to get a rebuild kit for the carb.I am not much of a mechanic, so any futher input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again, Chris"

NOTE: The flywheel nut on that

NOTE: The flywheel nut on that 40hp must be torqued to 105 foot pounds. Anything less will result in a sheared flywheel key and damaged tapers of the flywheel and crankshaft.

"Hey man, good luck with that motor. I have a 66 Johnson super seahorse 40hp. Took some time but got it working pretty darn well. Pushes my boat along quite nicely."
