johnson starter solinoid

ok, key on, power to solinoid. turn to start, no power to starter. the sol. is toast. 3 places say i can use ford prestolite sol and 3 say no. internal wiring is different from car type to boat type. who is right?

the difference is that one needs to be grounded to function.

Keep in mind the starter is enabled by grounding it through a neutral or throttle position activated ground switch. That switch fails just as often as the solenoids themselves, maybe more often.
