Hello you crazy boat mechanics!
So I have a question about the Driveshaft on my 48Hp Johnson SPL. First I'll tell you what happened.
I was testing out my carb rebuild and about ten minutes into the run I got the overheat alarm. About 10 seconds after that I lost power and there was a grinding noise coming from the lower unit. The motor itself is fine.
I dropped the lower unit and, well, this is where it gets bad.
Out of the three gears of the gear set, the reverse is the only one that survived. The other two are missing more teeth than a 50 year old hockey player.
Upon lifting off the upper driveshaft bearing housing, I realized that that's all I had left was a housing. Bearings....they just don't work when they are flat and mangled.
Ok so the question is, can I still use the driveshaft and bearing housing pictured below? I was hoping the driveshaft could be cleaned up by some careful grinding and heat. The housing might be a bust but maybe one of you can tell me if its usable as well. Thank you for any help you can send.
