Johnson slips but not as much when held in gear

" I have a 1955 Johnson SeaHor

" I have a 1955 Johnson SeaHorse 25hp. My first post on here revealed it to be a gear problem, but since then, I have noticed something new. When I hold the shifter forward (pretty much pull on it with my other arm) and drive, I can get my motor to run at about 1/2 throttle w/o slipping. If I let off the tension on the shifter, it slips...Could this be a clutch dog problem? Perhaps the gears are fine? Is the shift linkage just really worn? The whole motor is worn, there's slop everywhere....should I just look for a new motor? The only thing that is good on this motor really is the powerhead and it starts up on the first pull, idles great, I just can't go any more than an idle!

Thanks! "

" That does sound like a clutc

" That does sound like a clutch dog problem as a worse case, or a shifter linkage problem if you were to be really lucky.

I would start with making sure the shift linkage is properly adjusted. If it is not, then by pulling on the shifter as you describe would force the dog to engage completely. However, I would not discount the fact that even after doing so you can only go to half throttle without her slipping. I think in the long run, you will eventually find that the dog is at fault.

As for determining if its time to just go and look for a new motor, thats a judgement call that you will have to make. If your powerhead is in good shape, and it sounds like it is, then about the only other "moving" parts are down there in that lower unit. By straightening out any problems in there you would likely have yourself a good little motor there for many years to come.

I would weigh the cost of replacing it agains the cost of fixing it and take the lesser of the two evils. Also take into account that if you look at replacing it, and go with a used unit, you may wind up with just another motor that has been misused or abused and in short order be paying for repairs anyway.

Your call of course, and sometimes a tough one to make, but I wish you the best which ever way you go. "

Time to find out what the rea

Time to find out what the real problem is . The forward and reverse gears can be swapped to give a good "edge" .So if linkages are tight swap forward and reverse gear and turn the clutch dog end for end.You need to press the bushing out of the forward gear and press it into what is now the reverse.
