1978 85hp. How do I get/keep t

1978 85hp. How do I get/keep the detent ball+spring in place when reinstalling the top outer section to the base?
 
this one kicked my butt for al

this one kicked my butt for almost 30 minutes......I used a piece of tape to hold it...then shoved them together QUICKLY!! The tape is still there I think.....but it isn't binding so it will stay!

Thanks...I'd thought of that but wasn't sure it would hold with all the grease. It sure could have been designed differently!
 
I would spray it off with brak

I would spray it off with brake cleaner where you will use the tape. Make sure not to clean off too much grease from the moving parts
