" I recently aquired a Johnson Seahorse Model 20.
I was wondering if anyone knows what year and horse power rating it is? Does anyone know where I get a manual for it? I know that it is very old.
Thanks,

We need the model number to d

We need the model number to determine the year. It would be located on a plate that is attached to the transom bracket.

" The engine is green with red

" The engine is green with red lettering. Judging by the paint it looks like it wasn't used that much. I found that the model number is a TD 20 and the serial number is 039961 or 639961. Can't make out if it's a 0 or a 6 that begins the serial number. Anyway I checked for compression somewhat and it seems O.K.. I checked for spark on both plugs and it looks great, plugs look very clean. I will clean out the fuel tank and try and start it. The fuel valve was in the off position when I got it. I depressed the fuel mixture dial down and checked to see if it would prime, seems to work good. I checked to see if the slide knob
"looks art deco" goes from stop to start to slow to fast and it seems to work well also. How do you change the gear oil and what do you recommend?
I really appreciate any help that you can give me.
Thanks,

Ken..... The model number of

Ken..... The model number of TD-20 indicates that your engine is a 1946-1949 5hp Johnson. The OMC Model Guide does not specify an exact year. Apparently that model was manufactured throughout those years.

" Hey Joe,
This should be the last question that I have....
I flushed out the gas and put in new gas at 50/1 ratio and she started right up! It starts first pull every time! I'm very excited because I only paid 10.00 for it! I adjusted the lean/rich knob to about 4 and it seems happiest there.
I noticed that there is a 90 degree elbow fitting that has water shooting out like a pinhole size,
is that normal? It's located on the right size of the engine below the ID, slightly behind it. The water seems very warm almost hot to the touch...is that normal? lastly how do you change the gear oil and how much?
Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
Ken W "

"Ken.... Use a mixture of 24/1

"Ken.... Use a mixture of 24/1 ion that engine due to the powerhead bearing factor (1qt of 50/1 oil to 6gal gas).

The water shooting out of that 90° elbow is normal. You'll have to make the overheating judgement call.

The water pump is a rotor type setup, sets in back of the propeller. I'll e-mail you a picture of the type rotor. The impeller OMC part number is 300591 but has been unavailable for a number of years, however some dealerships may still have it left in stock.

I believe the lower unit uses "HiVis" (80/90w) gear lube, avbailable at Wal*Mart, K-Mart etc at a reasonable price. If anyone knows of any other lube this engine might use, feel free to jump in with that info. Pertaining to how it's to be filled.... I don't recall but the fill and level screw should be easy to spot. Fill from the bottom until the lube flows out of the top level screw hole.
