Johnson Sea Horse HD25 problem

Whenever I press the priming knob to prime the motor, fuel sprays out this hole instead of in the cylinder. I have tried adjusting the lean/rich and unscrewed what I think is the air intake pin but no luck. I think the whole thing is for air to go into the carb but I'm not sure.

Any suggestions?

Also, this is a two cylinder engine

That is the idle jet going into the rotary valve on the crankshaft. The L-shaped rod is the low speed mixture adjustment. It should be open 5/8 turn from lightly seated. It is very sensitive and critical to adjust for best idle.

When you press the primer knob, it shoots a charge of gas into the open air intake hole you are looking at. (the needle has to be open that 5/8 turn). Yes, it is somewhat sloppy in doing so, and yes some splatters back out in the wrong direction. However, some also goes on in the right direction, into the rotary valve. Hint: Have the motor sitting level. If tilted forward, gravity works against you and gas runs out in the wrong direction.

All this to say it is normal to get a face full when priming. Welcome to the world of antique outboads.

Okay thanks a lot! I'll try and report back to you.
