"I recently purchased a sail boat powered by a 9.9 Johnson Sailmaster. Didn't pay enough attention on seatrial. Anyway, it starts fine and runs ok up to maybe 1/3 throttle. Beyond that it starts to smoke (oil I think). It will not come up to full speed and seems to miss some when you try. When I raised it some brownish oily water drains out. Impeller replaced and lower end serviced recently. Compression checked and was acceptable. ANY IDEAS?"

Its 2 stroke so it will smoke

Its 2 stroke so it will smoke to some extent. If you run a 50:1 gas: oil mix using an outboard engine oil to TC-W3 spec it should not smoke excessively. If it is steam not blueish smoke then you have cooling system problems.

You'll get some oily residue from unburnt oil drain out but it should not be particularly noticeable with the correct fuel mix and oil.

The ignition is first thing to look at to try to cure the misfiring. Inspect all the HT leads and try new plugs perhaps.

Tell us the model number from the plate on the transom bracket and we can ID the exact year etc
