1988 Johnson 28hp outboard - I noticed that the red wire coming out of the regulator/rectifier had burned/broke apart. What would cause this? I will be ordering a new part (CDI 153-1778). This motor hasn't been used for several years and I was getting it ready.....the last time the boat was taken out by my granddaughter & boy friend they couldn't get it started. Do you think this broken wire was the problem? Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

"<font color=""119911"">The red wire is the DC positive output from the rectifier. If that is broken the battery will not charge but starting and running should not be affected.

Most likely the battery has been connected with reversed polarity. If so the rectifier is burnt out. Reversed polarity = instant death to rectifiers. There is some risk to the stator coil too but worry about that if the battery does not charge with the new rectifier.

If the engine has not been run for a couple of years or so you'll find some useful tips in the item on the subject</font> HERE <font color=""119911"">Some other useful info on other topics there too</font>"

"Thanks for your post! The kids may have hooked the battery up backwards. I've never hooked a battery up backwards so don't know what would happen, I guess I've always figured it just wouldn't work, like the starter wouldn't turn over. Thanks for pointing me to the other site for engines that haven't been run for several years. Good points! One of the problems I always have is getting rid of the old gas (5 gals), but I know having a fresh tank is the way to go. Again thanks!"
