Johnson outboard overheat?

So I pulled the motor off my boat this season to get a lower unit crack welded (a 1982 johnson 50hp outboard) and I decided to run it for a couple seconds without the lower unit to ensure it was running properly (I did the same last night with no issue) and the motor made a vicious clanking noise after a couple seconds of very weak running, and is now seized up. The motor is not hot though. Anyone have any ideas?

Even with the lower unit removed, one would need to run the engine for considerable more than 30 seconds in order for it to overheat. However.... if the powerhead made clanking noises and is seized, then obviously (for some reason), you're looking at a major overhaul of the powerhead.

Never mind I found the problem, the bendix shaft failed to recede to its starting position and got dragged by the motor, the clanking was the bendix binding up and stopping the flywheel. Thanks anyways though.
