Johnson Outboard Identification HELP

I resently purchased a 14' boat that come with what I was told is a '68-'69 Johnson 18-20hp outboard. The mounting bracket has been replaced with a Evinrude bracket, for unknown reason, so I have no idea what model it is. From what I can see, the serial # is J2826931. This is the number on the round plug under the hood. It has no Model number on the plug though.

I did some checking and talked to a guy that thinks my motor is a 1967 28 hp. He said the earlier years only had a Model number. He claims the "J" is for Johnson, and the 28 is for the hp. the 931 indicates the year. Can anyone verify what he is saying? I would appreciate the help.

Thanks,
Ridgewood

Your buddy is not up on the nomenclature.----------Post a picture/s of this motor and you will get instant answers.-------------Or go to -------the old omc --------site, and see the pictures there.

Ok I am a newby to this forum, so I will do my best to post some pictures of my motor. Hope some one can help me out on identifying the year and horsepower of it.
The pictures are showing a different hood than what it came with. It was in really bad shape The hood that was on it had no decals on it, and the ones in the pictures should probable not be used as a basis of identifying it.
The lower unit was painted black. I hope to restore it back to it orginal color of green.
I should have maybe taken a picture under the hood. If that will help, let me know.

Thanks

It is the 2 cylinder 20 HP ----------------and it looks to be a 69 version, judging by the cover and the green paint..

Thanks for the reply's. It seems odd to me that the number stamped on the side of the engine can not be used to track the information about it. I'm sure there was a tag on the mounting bracket, but I would think there is a way to use the stamped plug under the hood to also identify it. Would be nice to know for sure, instead of relying on the knowlege of people like you that are taking a educated guess of what it is by pictures. Not that I am doubting you. I appreciate your input.

I failed to mention that it had electric start. Not sure if that was an option or not. I took pictures of under the hood, this morning, but looks like I will not be able to post them until tonight.

I was looking at repainting it. I got the paint codes from the Johnson Technition that was claiming it to be a 1967, 28 hp, according to his books. Not finding any info or pictures to help me out on knowing the color matches and decals. You got any advise? You got a link to that old OMC site you were talking about?

Thanks again for your responses.

Sorry mate I have 40 + years of outboard repair experience !!!________I know what you have !!------Not an educated GUESS by any means.---------I am not sure why people with their " first boat " seem to scoff at expertise.

Sorry man. I didn't mean to offend you in any way. My appologies if I did. I appreciate your info.

Now back to finding any paint codes or getting the right service manuals, decals. You got any good sources? The OMC site with pictures?

Thanks again.

Look up -----------------the old omc ---site for all the pretty pictures in the catalogues.----------------The 28 HP model was only marketed in 62 / 62 / 64 then became a 33 HP in 65.---------------------Find all the model information on this page too. At the top under " boat engine parts ".--It is all there in black and white just for you.-----------------nymarine ------for paint ( closed till later this month )-----------------Your motor is identified by MODEL # and not in any way by the serial # which you posted and your friend tried to use.

So what you are telling me is that my motor is most likly a 1969 20 hp, with the model # of 20R69. Would this be considered a Seahorse? I am seeing different decals for the same time frame. Paint appears to be dark green for the engine/lower unit, and arctic white for the hood.

Thanks for your knowlege and advise. The old OMC is hard to read.
