" I bought a 1968 Glastron 156

" I bought a 1968 Glastron 156 Sportster and it has a 50 hp Johnson (cover says Johnson) motor. However, there is a plate on the transom mount that shows model 50473M, serial number E0009285. When I checked the number on this site, it shows the motor to be a 1974 50 hp Evinrude. I can't find any name on any other parts of the motor. My feeling is that this is an Evinrude motor that has a Johnson cover. I was told that a 50 hp Johnson eats gas like Koolaid. If this is an Evinrude, is it better on gas? Any info would be much appreciated. "

"Stanley.... The 50hp models that were extremely hard on fuel were the 1958 and 1959 V/4 models.

As you suspect, your engine is a 1974 50hp Evinrude with a Johnson hood which is a "Loop Charged" engine that is very fuel efficent. The Evinrude and Johnson engines were manufactured by OMC and are identical excepting the color.

" Cheryll.... Back up and scroll to the bottom of the previous page whereas you can enter your question/post via a button there under your own topic. It will then be listed at the top of the topic page. As it stands, it's pretty well buried under someone elses post.

I don't have the answer but I'm sure someone does.
