Johnson ooze 1990 25 hp

foggy day

New member
1990 Johnson 25 hp o/b runs good but black oily ooze runs down the outside after running for a while. The longer it runs the more you get. My thought is the previous owner, (I've only had it out once), used gas with ethanol that has affected it. Any insight to this condition, and any suggestions?

Re: Johnson ooze

Just unburned 2-stroke oil.
Stay with the 2% fuel/oil mix. not more.
Check the engine temperature and thermostat function so engine do not run cold.
Give it a treatment of Engine Tuner (BRP) or Sea Foam to clear off carbon build-up.

Re: Johnson ooze

I use a lot of Sea Foam in the truck - didn't think of putting it in the boat motor, makes sense though. Math not my strong point but 2% would be 50:1 yes - no ??? I've mixed a 40:1 ratio, (maybe a tad richer)for the Johnson. Some folks around here have had bad results in chain saws using ethanol gas with 50:1 mix. It's recommended to use 40:1 in the saws and small power equipt.

We do have one local source here in Vermont for non-ethanol. Do you recommend 50:1 (2%) with that fuel?

Re: Johnson ooze

Seafoam has some lubricating properties. Ethanol tends to attract water formation in the fuel and adding Seafoam to your mix helps to dry the fuel. Once the carbon is cleaned from your motor, the ooze will be light grey. 50:1
