Johnson Lower End (Gearcase) Compatibility

Hi All,

New to the forum, but not new to reading the posts, lots of great info!!! So as most lower end questions begin.....yesterday I hit a rock Sheered off the skeg, dented the prop and warped the propeller shaft. I have a 1986 Johnson VRO 120 model # CJ120TLCDC and am looking at replacing the lower end unit. I found a 1987 Johnson 120 online that's for sale at a reasonable price...or I assume reasonable $300. My question is I have read most of the posts regarding the interchangeability of Johnson units and have also looked at the part numbers from the Johnson\Evinrude website and the full lower end assembly for the 1986 is listed as part # 0397990 and the 1987 is listed as # 0398179. The one posts I read regarding the interchangeability suggests they would be a match but I am concerned that the part numbers don't match. The prop shaft is a 13 spline. What would the differences be between the part numbers? Thanks for any help or guidance you can provide!!!

Cheers

Ryan

Thanks for the help it's greatly appreciated!! The add I saw was on Craigslist so I will by taking a good look at it if it will fit. I asked the guy selling the lower unit to send me a picture of the lower end unit. Looks to be in good shape for the age but I did notice a difference in the "holes" above the cavitation plate. The lower unit that's on my motor now has 2 slots above the cavitation plate towards the rear and the one the guy is selling has holes in the same spot instead of slots. I did confirm that the motor it's coming off of is a 1987 Johnson 120. Why would their be this difference between the lower ends? Would they be compatible?

Thanks again for your help!!
