would like to know about a 65hp johnson. serial no. 65ESL72s what year is it I would think a 1972 by that umber being in the model no. What I want to know is there any special things about it, is it electric shift, will any shift box work , what other year parts will work on it, motor is suppose to run good, the foot is off because it was in the process of getting a new water pump installed when the man got ill and was unable to finish. the family said they would take $100.00 for it is it worth it?

First year of the " magflash ignition " for the 3 cylinder.-------------Yes it is electric shift and they are a very reliable shift system if it has been looked after.---------The control box that you need has a big " yellow " plug, no others will work.----------Those boxes were only used on the 71 / 72--- 2 cylinder 50 HP models and for one year ( 72 ) on the 3 cylinder 65 HP.

It totally depends on where you live.-------Some areas they are plentiful.-------E-BAY is the spot to look.---------I have a few , but am not into shipping them, too much bother to package them up. !!

Thanks racerone, you said the had magflash ignition, what is this ? The guy gave me the control box, so problem one solved. I am taking foot off to replace waterpump, is there any thing special I should be aware of in regard to the electric shift when I am taking off foot or replacing ?

The electronic ignition system is driven by the magneto under the flywheel.-------The motor can be pull started with a rope when the battery is completely dead.--------------Find the wires for the electric shift that go to the lower unit ( blue and green ) disconnect them and attach something so that you can pull them back up on re-assembly.
