My pet project/peeve is the restoration of this HD-25. I have managed to replace all of the missing parts that I know of. I can now get it to run at high speed but it quits when I move the lever to 'Start' or below. The ignition system has been completely overhauled and I get good spark to both plugs. The carb has been taken apart and cleaned. I'm using the recommended gas/oil mixture and following recommended starting instructions for this motor. Does anyone have any experience with this old model Johnson. I had to make a new cork float and have had to adjust it lower than the original setting to keep it from flooding. Could the inability to run at low speed be related to the ignition or is it more likely carb related?

Can anyone tell from the serial number 675882 the exact year of manufacture?

Thanks

I would really suspect a fuel issue is causing you the low speed stalls.

I have some very old Johnson service manuals. I'll have a dig around if there is some information that you think may help - just let me know...

You can check www.laingsoutboards.com - they may have an original float for your carb (for less than 10 bucks) which may make all the difference..."

"Thank you Graham. I really appreciate the information. Thanks for the tip on the float. I'm finding it difficult to find original parts for this old motor. I suspect my homemade float might be the problem also. I'll try Laings.

Best,

Chuck"

"Pretty simple to find out if the ignition is working at the lower end of it's range. Just set the throttle where it stalls out, or below (slower) and check for spark with a spark checking device of your choice. If it jumps accross a gap of 1/4" it should be good. Always good to check, and it takes just a second."
