Johnson Fast Strike 150 giving me trouble

"I have a 95' Sprint bass

"I have a 95' Sprint bass boat with a 95' Johnson Fast strike motor on it. There is a sensor that randomly goes off while the motor is running. I have been told it is the oil horn, which lets you know when the oil is getting low. However the oil tank is full. This sensor is in the box where the throttle and key are in. The little speaker in there is the one that is randomly going off. Is there something I can do to find out if this sensor is bad, or if there is something in my motor that is causing the sensor to alarm. If so how do I go about disconnecting this sensor, or checking the motor out for a problem. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks."

"I advise strongly against disconnecting the warning horn as that is the only warning you'll ever receive if problems arise. Which warning signal are you receiving?

(VRO Horn Warnings)
(J. Reeves)

1 - A steady constant beep = Overheating - The V/6 engines, possibly some others, have a fuel restriction warning which is also a steady constant beep.
2 - A beep every 20 or 40 seconds = oil level has dropped to 1/4 tank. (Late model engine = Every 40 seconds)
3 - A beep every other second = VRO failure, air leak in oil line, oil restriction, (anything that would result in a lack of oil being supplied to the engine).

NOTE - If the warning horn is the black plastic (overpriced) three wire type horn, the warning horn should beep once when the ignition key is turned to the ON position. If it does not, it is either faulty or someone has disconnected it (a stupid move!). At any rate, if it does not beep which indicates that the horn is non functional, find out why and do not run the engine until the problem is corrected."

"The horn randomly goes off while the motor is running. Sometimes when I take it out it makes the beep every other second, and sometimes it makes the constant beep. But it does not do this all the time. Sometimes I can crank it up at the lake and let it run for 30 minutes or longer and the horn never makes a noise other than the beep that it is supposed to make when you turn the key. And sometimes I can run it across the lake and idle around looking for a spot to fish and it never go off. Then when I crank it up to go somewhere else the horn will go off nonstop. There is no pattern to the horn when the alarm goes off. Sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn't. This is why I was wondering if it is a sensor that has gone bad somewhere. Any advice is greatly apprecaited. Thanks."

"I had a problem similer to yours. My horn would go off constantly. I bought a manual, ran numerous tests, work closly with a very helpful mechanic,[busy time of year and ther would be down time if I would have him fix problem] Ran oil test on vro, candy thermomator on thermostats, etc. Learned quite a bit. When I ran the boat off the muffs in the driveway, after turning of the ignition my horn would continue to go off constntly for about 30 seconds. I replaced the sending unit in the oil tank [bulb, hose filter and float, all one unit from dealer] solved my problem. Hope this helps. Never disconect that horn. It's there for a reason."
