"Johnson control box was used

"Johnson control box was used on 1974? engine this is complete with wiring loom and plug etc, will the wiring be same for similar Johnson control boxes or Evinrude? my other control box is OMC with push in on ignition switch for choke where Johnson is just switch to hold it on? I see the cable ends for Johnson are bit different to OMC, therefore is wiring same and could OMC cables be used on Johnson? Many thanks JBD"

"The main cable connectors at the engine must be the same color. If both the instrument wiring harness connector and the engine wiring harness connector are the same color (RED or BLACK), they are compatable.

BUT if one connector is BLACK and the other is RED, they are not compatable.

Note that OMC, Johnson, and Evinrude are identical. It is the model years that make the difference."

"Fine Joe thanks for information, can all these boxes OMC Johnson & Evinrude be fitted with each others cables at the control box as I noticed the Johnson box had a grub screw affair, would I have to get cables made up to go from Johnson box to my Evinrude 40hp 1984 BE40ELCR, this Johnson box is very smooth compared to Evinrude which is worn. many thanks JBD"

"James ,
Some later controls have a more complex horn in them for low oil,no fuel or overheat instead of just the overheat.Later ones evolved into an even more complex one with the vro test beep at each start-up.
Any post 73 harness/control should work but the different looking boxes usually have the various choke toggles ,switches ,and so forth.
With good crimp connectors and heat shrink, you could splice the two together mid-stream but usually it is best to leave it intact and maybe opt for a push-to-choke keyswitch for $25.00 and just leave the hard to use choke toggle to fill the hole.
Wire the new keyswitch to the harness you want and mt. it into the box you want.

The 1974 shift cable end may have a weird clip you simply pry apart and swap over to the nicer unit so you can clip that shift cable on the weird linkage...my 1977 V4 needed the same treatment and worked fine with a 1988 VRo side mt.
