Gday people, Im new in these here parts so if I am going about things the wrong way please set me straight.
I have a question for you all.
I currently have a 110hp 1987 hanging off my boat awesome motor but now it is sick ( nasty noises in power head and about $2000 to repair).
I also have come into possession of a 1979 100hp with the hydro electric shift ( can I change this hydro shift to a standard gearbox?)
Finaly, I have a 1985 95hp with a small chip on one of the exhaust/inlet ports.
My question for you guys. I need to rebuild one of the three, is any one of the motors I have better than the other for rebuild purpose. Like most of us I am not rolling in $$ so I want to rebuild the best motor over all.
It looks like all motors are rebuildable, all motors are crossflow and for better or worse you wont change me away from Johnson/Evinrude.

Thanks all,
crakajak

You need to take a closer look at the 100 HP motor. The last year for the hydro electric shift was 1972.

Hi ibnfshn, Looks like you may be right about the hydro shift which is good news to me. I dont have the 100 in my possession yet, pick it up this afternoon. So far I only have verbal info and email pics of motor. My manual only goes back as far as 1973. What I cant establish is which to rebuild the '85 90hp, the '87 110hp or the 1970s 100hp.
I have heard that there are good years of manufacture and bad ie. thin walled blocks. Also can you tell me what dictates the horsepower of what seems to me to be the same motors, only variance I can fathom is jetting of carbies. That said are parts interchangable.

Thanks

ps noticed USN Ret. good on you mate, it is a comforting feeling knowing you guys are watching.

That is a hard question to answer. Hopefully Joe Reeves will see this. Money wise it sounds like you would be better off with the 1985. Those old electric shift are good motors but parts are getting harder and harder to find as time goes on. But they can be had with a lot of searching.

Gday Bill, Have had to make an exec decision, the 72 110 is getting what it needs to get going and then handballed to someone else, the 87 110 is getting rebuilt eventualy and an 88 110 is going on the boat. The 85 90 is getting wrecked. Maybe soon I can go fishing.

Take it easy and thanks for your input.
