Johnson 90 Outboard just cut out... HELP!??

Hi, I have a Johnson 90 outboard engine for my boat. Was running it in low tide last weekend... ran into some shallow water and mud/muck at a low speed but still had to kind of drudge through it for a few minutes. Thermostat eventually spiked so we killed the engine once we got through the shallow spot after seeing some steam come from the engine for a minute or two. We restarted and continued on down another river way with no issues (thermostat gauge went back to normal) for about 10-15 minutes at a good speed.... then all of a sudden the boat died/engine completely cut off. No warning signs, no more steam from engine, ....nothing, just died and would not restart... needed a tow back. Any thoughts or ideas?

Thank you!

PS: The electronics still worked and we added fuel just to be safe, so battery was fine and fuel was obviously not empty either.

Also, I should mention that this was the first time I ever put this boat in the water so it's new to me. Ran perfect off and on for nearly 4-5 hours before we had the trouble that I posted above ^

your decision is is the problem fuel or fire?the first thing to do is check compression....then make sure fire will jump 7/16 with a good snap....if no fire disconnect the green and black wire from the power pack(s) and see if you got fire...this is the wire to your kill switch that is grounded when the lanyard is pulled to kill the motor....the motor must turn a minimum of 300 rpm to fire...was there any miss before it died as if you were having a fuel problem or did it just die?...did the bulb suck flat?.....when you are not running will the bulb get hard when you pump it?

Thanks for the response. The kill switch shouldn't have any problems... we recently re-wired and tested it rigorously. It has fire and cranks... spark plugs are all brand new too. The bulb got hard before we departed when we primed the engine, not sure if it sucked flat or not though. As we were leaving the dock we heard some kind of alarm or safety beep going off, not sure if that was because of a detected fuel problem or what..... We didn't have any other issue with anything until the boat stopped dead 5 hours later (no miss before it died, just stopped on a dime).
