Johnson 9.5

Hello I’m new to outboards and I have a question about how the exaust works on a 1973 Johnson 9.5 short shaft. I was able to get it fired up today running it in a tub of water. I had water coming from the rubber tube in the cowling but there was also water coming from the exaust housing on both sides above the lower unit. Is that okay. Thanks

Sounds normal.-----Also check the thermostat.---I often find them stuck open or missing.

I started on the thermostat on my 9.5 Johnson today. The housing bolts came off easily but the housing itself is pretty fast. This outboard has seen very little use. Everything seems original.
Any advice on removing the housing without damaging it?

It can not be that tight.

Racerone you were right. Sprayed a little kroil on the gasket after I trimmed it (it still had paint on it) chiseled around with a five in one tool started prying and it came.
